- Story Text: Russian leader Vladimir Putin visited his home city of St. Petersburg on Saturday (January 27) to mark the 80th anniversary of the city's liberation from the Nazi siege during World War Two.
The Siege of Leningrad (St. Petersburg's name in Soviet times) lasted for 872 days, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of people who died of starvation or bombardment and became one of the longest and deadliest sieges in the history of warfare.
The lifting of the blockade on January 27, 1944 marked a major Soviet victory in the war, along with the Battles of Moscow, Kursk and Stalingrad.
Putin laid flowers at the Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery to pay tribute to the blockade victims, including his elder brother Viktor. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
