- Story Text: The nominees for best actor at the 85th Annual Academy Awards are Bradley Cooper, Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Joaquin Phoenix, and Denzel Washington.
In "Silver Linings Playbook," Bradley Cooper plays a young man suffering from bipolar disorder, who, upon moving home after a stay at a psychiatric hospital, begins to fall for a grief-stricken young widower, played by Jennifer Lawrence. This is the first Oscar nomination for Cooper, 38, who is previously known for the raunchy "Hangover" comedies, and "Wedding Crashers."
In "Lincoln," Daniel Day-Lewis plays the title role of the 16th U.S. president as he navigates passage for the anti-slavery thirteenth amendment to the U.S. constitution, in 1865. Day-Lewis, 55, is the front-runner for this year's award, and if he wins he will make history as the first person to win the best actor prize three times. He previously won for the 1989 film "My Left Foot" and the 2007 film "There Will Be Blood," and was nominated for "In the Name of the Father" (1993) and "Gangs of New York" (2002).
In "Les Miserables," a film version of the popular Broadway musical, Hugh Jackman plays Jean Valjean, a prisoner in early 19th century France who decides to break his parole following his release and assume a new identity. This is the first Oscar nomination for Jackman, 44, who has become one of the world's most popular actors with his role as Wolverine in the "X-Men" comic book film franchise, although he has starred in musical theater on Broadway, having won a Tony award for "The Boy From Oz." Jackman hosted the 81st Annual Academy Awards in 2009.
In "The Master," Joaquin Phoenix plays an alcoholic World War II veteran who turns for help to the founder of a controversial group known as The Cause. This is the third Academy Award nomination for Phoenix, 38, with his first nomination for a supporting role in "Gladiator" (2000), and a leading actor nod in "Walk the Line" (2005).
And in "Flight," Denzel Washington plays a pilot with a substance abuse problem whose life changes after he performs a daring maneuver during an airliner crash. This is the fifth Oscar nomination for Washington, 58, having previously won a supporting actor prize for the 1989 film "Glory" and a leading actor award for "Training Day" (2001). His other nominations are for supporting actor for "Cry Freedom" (1987) and leading actor nominations for "Malcolm X" (1992) and "The Hurricane" (1999).
The 85th Annual Academy Awards will be handed out in a live telecast ceremony from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, February 24th. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
