Snoop Dogg and the comedic cast of ‘The Underdogs’ walked the purple carpet on Tuesday (January 23) for the premiere of Amazon Prime’s new film.
‘The Underdoggs’ takes Snoop Dogg, real name Calvin Broadus, on a roller coaster ride as Jaycen "Two Js" Jennings, a washed up foul mouth former professional football star taking on coaching duties for a youth football team as a result of community service, a role Snoop Dogg says hits close to home.
“To have these stories so similar to the kids who grew up in my league and the ones who made it, the ones who didn't make it…it's all about love at the end of the movie,” Snoop Dogg told Reuters.
Snoop says this film came about from his personal experiences as a coach and mentor for his Snoop Youth Football League in his hometown of Long Beach, California, a league that has gone on to send players into the professional ranks.
“People go through these things every day, all day, whether it's football or any sport. Anything that brings kids together brings family together. Mentorship, learning, teaching is good for the mind, for the heart, for the soul,” said Snoop Dogg.
Along with Snoop Dogg the cast includes stand up comedians George Lopez, Mike Epps and Tika Sumpter who said being on set with Snoop was a comedic experience in itself.
“Snoop is like the biggest kid of them all. They're having rap battles on the side. The kids think they can rap better than Snoop. I'm like, you know, have you seen snoop? And yeah, they learned a big lesson.”
Snoop Doog says fans can expect an authentic underdog story with a feel of cult classics like ‘Bad News Bears’ and the ‘Mighty Ducks.’
‘The Underdoggs’ is rated R and can be streamed Friday (January 26) on Amazon Prime.
