The Oscar nominated directors of 2014 are Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, for "Birdman," Richard Linklater for "Boyhood," Bennett Miller for "Foxcatcher," Wes Anderson for "The Grand Budapest Hotel," and Morten Tyldum for "The Imitation Game."
Mexican filmmaker Inarritu, 51, received three Oscar nominations this year for "Birdman," picking up nods for best original screenplay and as a nominated producer in the best picture category, in addition to best director. He was previously nominated as director for the 2006 film "Babel," and notable films of his include 2010's "Biutiful" and 2000's "Amores Perros." Despite losing early awards to "Boyhood" director Richard Linklater, Inarritu is pulling ahead in the race, having picked up the Directors Guild Award (DGA), a strong indicator of which filmmaker will win the Oscar. If he does win, he will become the second Latin American filmmaker to win in the category, with the first being last year's winner for "Gravity," Alfonso Cuaron.
Inarritu faces stiff competition from Richard Linklater, whose innovative film "Boyhood" was a labor of love for the Texas-born filmmaker. "Boyhood" was filmed over the course of twelve years, with the same ensemble cast, to create an experience that takes the audience through the aging and maturation of an American Family. Linklater is nominated for three Academy Awards for "Boyhood," including best original screenplay and best picture as a nominated producer. He previously earned two screenplay nominations for his work on the "Before Sunrise" film trilogy, and some of his notable films include 1993's "Dazed and Confused," 2003's "School of Rock," and 2011's "Bernie."
"Foxcatcher" director Bennett Miller is nominated for his film about the harrowing real-life story of convicted murderer John E. DuPont, an heir to the DuPont family fortune and philanthropist who dabbled in the sport of wrestling, and shot and killed Olympian gold-medalist Dave Schultz on his Pennsylvania estate in 1996. This is the second best director nomination for Miller, whose previous film "Capote" earned him a nod in 2006. He also directed the Brad Pitt film "Moneyball" (2011).
Wes Anderson, whose offbeat filmmaking style has gained him a rabid fan following, is nominated for his first best directing Oscar for "The Grand Budapest Hotel," which is also his first film to be nominated in the best picture category. Anderson is nominated for a total of three Oscars for "Budapest," including best original screenplay and best picture. He was previously nominated for best original screenplay for 2002's "The Royal Tenenbaums," and 2012's "Moonrise Kingdom," as well as a nomination in the animated film category for 2009's "Fantastic Mr. Fox." Other notable films include 2004's "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," 1998's "Rushmore," and 1996's "Bottle Rocket."
And rounding out the category is Morten Tyldum, a Norwegian filmmaker whose first English-language film "The Imitation Game" has earned him high praise in Hollywood, not to mention a best director nomination. The film portrays the private and professional life of mathematician Alan Turing (played by Benedict Cumberbatch), whose work helped break the Nazi "Enigma" code during World War II, who was later tried for indecency for homosexuality, and chemically castrated by the British government. Tyldum has been directing features since 2003, with the release of his first film, "Buddy." Previous credits include 2008's "Fallen Angels," and 2011's "Headhunters."
