- Story Text: Filipino pet lovers went on "dates" with rescued animals to celebrate Valentine's Day at an animal shelter in Manila on Wednesday (February 14) to show them affection and also to promote pet adoption.
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) animal shelter held its "FURst date" event where visitors mingled with some of its rescued dogs and cats inside themed booths. Visitors and animals were given snacks in exchange for a 750pesos ($13) donation to the shelter
PAWS campaign officer Sharon Yap said 90 percent of the animals at the shelter were from saved from 'cruelty and neglect'.
"With this event they see that not all people out there in the outside world are out to hurt them," she told Reuters. "Some people are also here to take care of them, and even if these people cannot commit to their forever homes or cannot commit to adopting them, at least they are here to help in the rehabilitation and to raise funds for them."
Yap added the activity helps dismiss the image of the dangerous and aggressive shelter animal and hoped the spirit of Valentine's would encourage Filipinos to adopt, rather than buy pets.
The animal shelter currently houses more than 65 dogs and 170 cats, most of them victims of animal abuse or pet neglect, and will allow visitors to spend time with some of them until February 17.
