- Story Text: Japanese film "The Box Man" ("Hako Otoko") received its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on Saturday (February 17) evening.
The film, co-written and directed by Gakuryu Ishii, is adapted from Kobo Abe's 1973 novel of the same name.
It centres on a photographer called "Myself", played by Masatoshi Nagase, who comes across a man sheltering under a cardboard box, observing the life in the busy Tokyo streets through a peephole and taking notes. Inspired by the idea, Myself, too, decides to become a "box man".
"The Box Man", which also stars Tadanobu Asano and Koichi Sato among its wider cast, is screening in the festival's sidebar Berlinale Special section.
Also premiering on Saturday evening was French writer-director Olivier Assayas's latest movie, a Covid comedy-drama titled "Suspended Time" ("Hors du Temps").
Set in April 2020, the movie sees filmmaker Etienne and his brother Paul and their partners spending a lockdown in the brothers' childhood home. It stars Vincent Macaigne as Paul, Micha Lescot as Etienne and Nine d'Urso and Nora Hamzawi as their partners.
"Suspended Time" is one of 20 titles vying for the festival's top prize, the Golden Bear for best film award.
