- Story Text: To the beat of the drums, Brazilians gathered in Rio de Janeiro’s Sambadrome on Saturday (February 3) to bless the iconic venue a week ahead of the beginning of the carnival’s competitions.
Dressed mostly in white, members of the Christian, Umbanda and Candomble faiths took part in the ecumenical rite to clean the venue.
"We clean ourselves with scented water, flowers, with everything we are entitled to, so that Carnival is glorified for all of us," said one local resident, Maria da Conceicao, who took part in the blessing parade.
Samba school members were perfumed with herbs, scented water and smoke to ward off bad omens from the carnival.
Carnival, one of Rio's most important annual events, involves street parties and competitions where the city’s top samba schools face each other in a week-long competition to crown the winner.
