- Story Text: The news that a leading critic of Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, had died resulted in outrage across the world Friday (February 16). Some 50 demonstrators gathered outside the Russian consulate in New York City in the late morning hours.
They were there to mourn the death of 47-year-old Alexei Navalny. They held posters featuring Putin mugshots and held signs that read, "Stop Putin's Gulag." And they chanted, "Putin is a killer," and, "Russia will be free."
They are hoping for a turning point.
"Please see us and hear us. This is a dark, dark day in the history of my country," said one participant, addressing the crowd. "I just want to say to the world, please help us. Please don't forget us. Please fight. Please do whatever you can."
