- Story Text:Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Danielle Brooks, Emily Blunt, America Ferrera and Jodie Foster are in the running for the actress in a supporting role Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards, which will be held on March 10.
Below is a list and brief description of the nominees.
DA'VINE JOY RANDOLPH, "THE HOLDOVERS"
Da'Vine Joy Randolph has been a standout during awards season, scooping up a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award, BAFTA and Golden Globe among other accolades for best supporting actress in "The Holdovers".
In the film, which sees three unlikely people thrown together in a Boston boarding school during the holidays, the U.S. actress plays Mary Lamb, the school cook, who is grieving the death of her son and doesn't want to celebrate. This is her first Oscar nomination.
DANIELLE BROOKS, "THE COLOR PURPLE"
American actress Danielle Brooks is nominated for the 2023 musical film version of "The Color Purple", which follows the story of two Black American teenage sisters, Celie and Nettie, in the American South during the early 1900s.
Brooks plays Sofia, a role portrayed by Oprah Winfrey in the 1985 film. This is Brooks' first Oscar nomination.
EMILY BLUNT, "OPPENHEIMER"
British actress Emily Blunt is nominated for historical drama "Oppenheimer" about the making of the atomic bomb during World War Two.
Blunt plays Kitty Oppenheimer in the movie, the wife of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is portrayed by Cillian Murphy. This is Blunt's first Oscar nomination.
AMERICA FERRERA, "BARBIE"
American actress America Ferrera was nominated for pink phenomenon "Barbie", the runaway box office hit of 2023 about the famed Mattel doll.
In the film, Ferrera plays a mother of a teenage daughter and assistant to the Mattel chief executive and features in one of the movie's key scenes, a monologue about the double standards women face. This is her first Oscar nomination.
JODIE FOSTER, "NYAD"
American actress Jodie Foster is nominated for Netflix film "NYAD", which recounts the true story of world-class athlete Diana Nyad as she sets off on a record breaking swim from Cuba to Florida at 60.
Starring alongside Annette Bening, Foster plays Nyad's best friend Bonnie Stoll in the movie.
This is Hollywood A-lister Foster's fifth acting nomination at the Academy Awards, and she has won two leading actress Oscars previously.
