Summary:What began as a campaign for electoral reforms and broader civil liberties ultimately became religious war, with Protestants & Roman Catholics engaged in bitter conflict in several of Ulster's main cities, including Belfast and Londonderry. Members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary came under attack from both sides while trying to restore order. 5 people died in the worst of the violence, the youngest victim a seven year old boy, Patrick Rooney, who was shot dead while standing at the window of his home. Eventually, the RUC announced its inadequacy to contain the situation and units of the British army were called to end the hostilities. NOTE: Date is approximate.
