- Story Text:Landslides and rains blocked one of the rail links to the iconic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, local officials said on Monday (February 26).
Heavy rains over the weekend caused the Vilcanota River to overflow, flooding Machu Picchu village's roads and train tracks, a stepping stone before reaching the world-famous archaeological site.
Local authorities said two people were missing, and 17 were affected by Sunday's mudslide.
The concessionaire for trains heading to the archaeological site announced on Monday that operations had been suspended for two days.
The heavy rains also flooded and cut off more than 40 native communities in central eastern Peru, causing significant loss of animals, crops, and food sources.
The Peruvian government declared on Monday a state of emergency in 100 districts in 17 regions due to damage caused by the rains.
