- Story Text: Award-winning Indian actor Allu Arjun says he hopes to bring his "Pushpa" movie franchise to "bigger spaces and bigger places" as he made his first visit to Berlin and an international film festival.
Arjun appeared at the European Film Market at the Berlinale to promote both the first "Pushpa" movie as well as its sequel, titled "Pushpa: The Rule", which is out in cinemas in India this August.
"We want to take this film to other international markets as well and we thought Berlin Film Festival is a good place to start," Arjun told Reuters in an interview on Saturday (February 17).
"It's a very rooted Indian story, a South Indian rooted story. And I feel that it's very authentically made and I feel that authenticity will resonate with the people not just from India, but overseas as well," Arjun, 41, said.
Written and directed by filmmaker Sukumar, the first film, "Pushpa: The Rise" is billed as a story of an underdog and and stars Arjun as a red sandalwood smuggler who rises through the ranks to the top of the syndicate.
Released in December 2021, the Telugu language "Pushpa: The Rise", was a box office hit and became one of the highest-grossing Indian movies in 2021.
"Pushpa 2" will contain surprises and a new dimension, Arjun said.
"It's going to be on a bigger, higher scale. The film is going to have Pushpa in a very different light. There is a surprising element to it, which, for people who have seen the posters, they could be guessing that there's a lot of, devotional element as well."
Shooting the sequel offered new challenges for its leading man, as well.
"I'm used to performing in a certain way in part one. But now I have to break my own patterns and come up with something that is familiar yet new. So that was a challenge," he said.
While the second instalment is currently in post-production, Arjun is already eyeing an extension to the franchise.
"I think it's leading to 'Pushpa 3' as well. The way it's coming out, I'm feeling it. Maybe not immediately but, you know, eventually."
