I just think it is so important that they defeat Trump… I just think that that would be a disaster for our country if Trump is our president for the next four years and so I’m doing what I can to make sure that doesn’t happen.” (SOUNDBITE) (English) MINNEAPOLIS RESIDENT, LINDA RIBBACH, WHO SAID SHE VOTED FOR JOE BIDEN, SAYING: [IN REFERENCE TO BIDEN] “Well, he provides a certain sanity, a certain graciousness and a wisdom and experience of government, federal government, unlike some other candidates that are just out for themselves.” (SOUNDBITE) (English) MINNEAPOLIS RESIDENTS, BOTH RETIRED, DOREEN BEHNKE (LEFT), IN HER 80'S, AND HER DAUGHTER JOLENE BEHNKE (RIGHT), SAYING: DOREEN: “I voted for Donald Trump.” REPORTER ASKING OFF-CAMERA: And why is it important for you? DOREEN: “Because I think he's the best candidate for the good for the job. He's done it before, and I think he can do it again. He's a good man. He's a fighter. And he'll help save this country.” JOLENE: “And I voted for Nikki Haley to cancel out Donald Trump, because I think he's by far the worst candidate. So we have a divided household.” (SOUNDBITE) (English) RETIRED MINNEAPOLIS RESIDENT, KATHY GREULICH, IN HER 70’S, SAYING: “Trump is not my favourite person to be on the ballot, and I think he needs to be, you know, not re-elected.” VARIOUS OF PEOPLE VOTING INSIDE POLLING STATION (SOUNDBITE) (English) MINNEAPOLIS RESIDENT, RETIRED, DOREEN BEHNKE, IN HER 80’S, SAYING: “Well, the border is probably the most important [issue], but I think our country is, has not been on the right track the past few years. And I think we need a president who knows what to do and how to correct that situation.” (SOUNDBITE) (English) MINNEAPOLIS RESIDENT, REGISTERED NURSE, REBECCA JENSEN, IN HER EARLY 50’S, SAYING: “I think the things about the environment are very important. I think the economy is important and health care. I'm a nurse and so I still see COVID at work frequently. And people keep saying we're post-pandemic, post-pandemic, but we're really not. We're still in the midst of it. So I just think that that having somebody that believes in science in the White House is a good thing.” (SOUNDBITE) (English) RETIRED MINNEAPOLIS RESIDENT, KATHY GREULICH, IN HER 70’S, SAYING: “The issues are having a government that is fair to everyone, no matter if they're a Democrat or Republican, and that the head person will listen to us and do what we would like them to do.” (SOUNDBITE) (English) MINNEAPOLIS RESIDENT, RETIRED, JOLENE BEHNKE, SAYING: “And I am voting 100% for women's rights this election. It's all about women's rights for me, protecting what was ours and is being taken away by people who have no right to do so. I'm very, very passionate about this election.” SIGN OUTSIDE POLLING STATION WELCOMING VISITORS TO BRYN MAWR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL VARIOUS OF PEOPLE VOTING INSIDE BRYN MAWR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL VOTING STATION WOMAN PLACING RED “I VOTED” STICKER ON HER SWEATER BRYN MAWR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EXTERIOR SIGNS ON DOORS TO BRYN MAWR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL READING (English): “VOTE HERE” (SOUNDBITE) (English) MINNEAPOLIS RESIDENT, RETIRED IT PROFESSIONAL, GEORGE WHO DID NOT WANT TO GIVE HIS LAST NAME, 76, SAYING: “I really believe in democracy, and I worry about democracy, and I hope America can stay a shining light in the world about democracy and fairness and doing the right thing.” (SOUNDBITE) (English) MINNEAPOLIS RESIDENTS, BOTH RETIRED, DOREEN BEHNKE (LEFT) AND HER DAUGHTER JOLENE BEHNKE (RIGHT), SAYING: JOLENE: “Why is voting important for you?” DOREEN: “Because I love my country.” JOLENE: “That's a great answer, but I'll steal the same one. - Story Text: Minnesota residents headed to the polls on Tuesday (March 5) as the state joined others across the United States in the biggest day of primaries in the presidential election cycle, known as Super Tuesday.
In the Bryn Mawr neighbourhood of the state's capitol, Minneapolis, people cast their vote at a local elementary school.
Residents' opinions about who they thought would be the best president were mixed.
“I voted for Donald Trump,” said octogenarian Doreen Behnke.
“And I voted for Nikki Haley to cancel out Trump,” said Behnke’s daughter, retired Minneapolis resident Jolene Behnke.
Republican frontrunner Donald Trump is expected to dominate the nominating contests taking place on Tuesday.
Fifteen states will hold Republican contests. More than a third of delegates will be up for grabs. About a third of Democratic delegates will also be awarded in primaries across the country on Tuesday, but President Joe Biden does not face a serious challenge for his party's nomination.
“I really believe in democracy, and I worry about democracy," said 76-year-old Minneapolis resident George, who declined to give his last name. "I hope America can stay a shining light in the world."
