- Story Text: Houthi new recruits paraded at Yemen's Sanaa University on Thursday (March 7) in a show of solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The Houthis, who control Yemen's capital and most populous areas, have targeted international shipping in the Red Sea in what they say is solidarity with Palestinians against Israel, drawing U.S. and British retaliatory strikes since last month.
Three crew members of the True Confidence dry bulk carrier were killed in a missile attack off Yemen on Wednesday (March 6), the owners and manager of the ship confirmed in a statement on Thursday.
The group's strikes are disrupting a route that accounts for about 12% of global maritime traffic, and forcing firms to take a longer, more expensive route around Africa.
The U.S. announced earlier this year that Houthi rebels would return to a list of terrorist groups, which will hit the Iran-aligned group with harsh sanctions that aim to cut off funding and weapons the Houthis have used in their Red Sea attacks.
