- Story Text: French actor Juliette Binoche will celebrate her 60th birthday on Saturday (March 9).
Binoche was born in the French capital in 1964, and has appeared in both French and English language films during her career spanning over 30 years.
In the 1980s she played a variety of television roles, before appearing in 1985 in Jean-Luc Godard's award-winning "Hail Mary" ("Je vous salue, Marie") as Juliette. She said in a 2022 Deadline film magazine interview that the late French director was "like a cold shower" and it "wasn't an easy relationship but at the same time I felt happy."
She won the Volpi Cup and César award for best actress for her performance as a grieving music composer in Krzysztof Kieślowski's "Three Colours: Blue" in 1993.
However, it was in 1997 that Binoche won her first Oscar for playing a nurse in Anthony Minghella's 1996 war-time romantic drama "The English Patient", opposite Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas. She later scooped the BAFTA award for best supporting actress for the part, too.
In 2001, Binoche was Oscar nominated again, this time in the leading actress category for Lasse Hallstrom's 2000 romantic drama "Chocolat", also starring Johnny Depp. In the film, she plays a French woman who runs a chocolate shop in a small remote village but comes up against the local community's traditional values.
Binoche joked that as a child she had a "strong" relationship with chocolate, but she did not understand "the guilt of it", or why it was considered "bad".
At Cannes in 2010, Binoche won the best actress award for her role as an antiques dealer in Abbas Kiarostami's "Certified Copy".
More recently, Binoche won the 2023 International Goya Award in recognition of what the Spanish Film Academy dubbed an impressive career.
Binoche is among the cast in new Apple TV+ series "The New Look" that follows the rise of fashion designer Christian Dior, as he dethrones Coco Chanel, played by Binoche.
A regular on the fashion scene at Paris Fashion Week, Binoche told Reuters she does not have one style:
"I love being cool...because it feels comfortable. But I love also the very elegant...like, corsets...But for a few hours, two or three hours, no more."
On the future of her career, Binoche told Deadline she is not interested in becoming a director, but she does plan to further expand into the world of television, beginning with her portrayal of Chanel.
She is also starring in Lance Hammer's "Queen at Sea", in "The Return" directed by Uberto Pasolini and in Ethan Hawke's "Camino Real".
