- Story Text: Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev's plane touched down in Moscow on Tuesday (June 5) night, ending a week in the West highlighted by a superpower summit with United States President George Bush and an historic meeting with South Korea's President Roh Tae-woo.
Gorbachev, accompanied by his wife Raisa, landed at the capital's Vnukoo 2 airport, and was met by Communist Party and government leaders.
Gorbachev's seven-day North American tour included a stop in Canada for talks with Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, the Washington summit with Bush, a visit to farmers and business leaders in Minneapolis and morning coffee with former President Ronald Reagan in San Francisco.
But he flew home to continuing ethnic unrest, this time in the Nagorno-Stepanakert region.
Soviet Interior Ministry forces are maintaining tight control over Stepanakert in the disputed Azerbaijani enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, claimed by Armenians, and bordering regions of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Troops patrol streets and anyone is liable to document checks, according to the Soviet television bulletin, Vremya.
Head of the Interior Forces in Stepanakert, V.V. Ogorodnikov, confirmed there had been recent mass disorder in the city and that automatic weapons caches had been seized. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
