- Story Text: Pakistan's cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan has
raised 20,000 US dollars for flood victims by auctioning
the bat he used during Pakistan's victorious campaign in
the 1992 World Cup.
Imran Khan arrived at the Pakistan Television (PTV)
station in Islamabad on Saturday evening (August 4) to auction
his old bat and sweater.
He said it was the sight of so many people made homeless in the
July floods that motivated him to donate his cricketing gear.
"I saw the areas, Raja Bazaar, Kashmiri Bazaar, and the
areas around Leh Nullah. It was so painful to watch poor
people , their houses destroyed, shops destroyed. So I am
trying to do my bit," Khan said.
It appears it was not the first time he had his cricketing
regalia to raise funds. However he assured us it was no
ordinary bat.
"This is a bat which used to be specially made for me.This
is the last of that one left. So I am going to have that
auctioned . And this is my sweater which I (wore) when I used
to play cricket. Everything else has been donated or auctioned
for Shaukat Khanum (cancer hospital). So these were the last
things left." Khan said.
The fund raising programme which included Pakistani film
stars, singers and other well-known personalities went on for
hours.
It was eventually sold to a Mr Mehmood for 20,000 US
dollars. Mehmood, an industrialist from Lahore, said he had
previously bought cricketer Javid Maindad's bat a few years
ago.
Khan led the Pakistan cricket team to victory in Melbourne
Australia in 1992. It was the first and only time Pakistan has
won the World Cup, wresting victory from a then formidable
English team.
That was the bat that won Pakistan its cricket pride in
1992 and on Saturday it went to help victims of flooding which
hit the country last July, less than two weeks ago.
Almost two hundred people were killed and thousands
rendered homeless by flash floods that followed heavy
downpours.
Soon after the 1992 World Cup victory, Khan helped build a
huge cancer Hospital in Lahore, capital of Pakistan's Punjab
Province.
The hospital, named after Khan's mother who died of
cancer, is reported to be the only Cancer Hospital that
provides free treatment to 85% of its patients.
Khan, who played International cricket for almost two
decades, and was famous for his deadly fast bowling, has been
ranked among the Top Ten of all great cricketers of the century.
Since 1996, Imran has been actively involved in politics
in Pakistan.
Almost two hundred people were killed and thousands
rendered homeless by flash floods that followed the downpours.
