- Story Text: On the day on which the Soviet leader, Leonid Brezhnev agreed with West German Chancellor Willy Brandt on a formula for the Berlin problem, issued a joint declaration and addressed the German people on television, he also met West German Trade Union leaders.
Trade Union representatives and West German communist leaders came to Mr. Brezhnev's hilltop Petersburg Hotel for discussions, Monday (21 May).
Among them were Herr Bachmann and Herr Riesmann of the German Communist Party. Mr. Brezhnev and the Trade Union officials afterwards met newsmen. It was Mr. Brezhnev's last complete day in West Germany.
Later in the day, Herr Brandt and Mr. Brezhnev agreed on strict adherence to the 1971 four power Berlin agreement and its complete application.
In the joint declaration the two leaders said the agreement was a basic precondition for lasting detente in Central Europe and for improved Soviet-West German relations.
And in a television address to the German people, the Soviet leader declared that it was largely true that the world was nearer than ever before to a listing peace.
SYNOPSIS: Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev's stay at the petersburg Hotel neared its end on Monday - his last full day in West Germany. But the day was exceptionally full.
Mr. Brezhnev agreed a formulae on the Berlin problem with Chancellor Brandt, issued a joint declaration, and spoke to the German people on television. As part of his full schedule, he also met West German Trade Union leaders.
With the trade union representatives who came to the Petersburg Hotel for discussions with Mr. Brezhnev were leaders of the German Communist Party.
Later Brezhnev agreed on strict adherence to the 1971 four power agreement on Berlin. And in his television address the Soviet leader said the world seemed nearer than ever before to a lasting peace.
