- Story Text: The preview of “Princess Diana’s Elegance & A Royal Collection” was held at New York’s Carlyle Hotel on Wednesday (May 22).
“This is the biggest auction that's taken place since Diana herself did an auction in 1997,” said Martin Nolan, co-founder and executive director of Julien’s Auctions.
More than 150 items of Princess Diana and other royals will go to auction on June 27th in Los Angeles, California. It will also be available online at the auction house's website, juliensauctions.com.
Last December, Julien’s Auction sold Princess Diana’s black and blue ballerina-length evening dress, by designer Jacques Azagury with a matching illustration for a world record of $1,148,080 dollars and it ‘inspired’ them to have this auction, the largest Princess Diana collection sale since 1997.
The auction’s top billing for this time is ‘Princess of Wales’ Murray Arbeid Midnight Blue Strapless Tulle Diamante Star Gown,' which Diana wore for the 1986 Phantom of the Opera Premiere.
This gown is expected to go for $200,000 - $400,000, but Nolan expects it might "set a new world record because it's so amazing."
Other top items include a Spanish flamenco-style magenta silk and lace evening dress designed by Victor Edelstein and a pink floral shirt dress designed by Catherine Walker.
Nolan thinks this auction "ticks all the boxes as regards style and royal history, pop culture history, and it's also an investment."
