This is one of the topics we will discuss, the fiscal reform, which I repeat, has to do with a tax reform but also, a public spending reform.” ABINADER SPEAKING IN NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) DOMINICAN REPUBLIC'S PRESIDENT-ELECT, LUIS ABINADER, SAYING: “Of course, we have a plan. We have had a plan since we arrived at the government. And it’s a plan for these four years to improve our education, the primary (health) assistance, where more resources are needed; to continue with the police reform, which has progressed.” ATTENDEES LISTENING TO ABINADER (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) DOMINICAN REPUBLIC'S PRESIDENT-ELECT, LUIS ABINADER, SAYING: “Of course, the Haiti situation has caused imports to dwindle because there’s a country in crisis. And imports have decreased by maybe 15 percent, I don’t remember now. I think this will be normalised and that the arrival of the Kenyan troops will be the beginning. Of course, normalisation in Haiti is not the same as normalisation in other countries. Normalisation in Haiti is different.” ABINADER SPEAKING DURING NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) DOMINICAN REPUBLIC'S PRESIDENT-ELECT, LUIS ABINADER, SAYING: “We are in coordination with countries that are participating in the security in Haiti. When these forces (Kenyan) arrive, we must know the consequences it will imply. I can tell you all security mechanisms and the country’s armed forces are aware of any risk or new action, I can’t tell much but we have the knowledge, information and intelligence to be prepared in the face of any setback.” ABINADER SPEAKING AT NEWS CONFERENCE

- Story Text:The Dominican Republic’s president-elect Luis Abinader said on Monday (May 20) he would sit down with opposition leaders to discuss a potential fiscal reform.
Abinader said the reform would include tweaks to taxation as well as public spending, and would not put the Dominican Republic's economic growth at risk while looking to protect the nation's most vulnerable. However, he cautioned that his proposal would likely go into effect with some changes.
Speaking a day after being re-elected for a second term, Abinader also said the violence crisis hitting neighbour Haiti has dwindled imports. Yet, he hoped the arrival of Kenyan troops to pacify the country would deliver results.
Responding to Haiti's appeal for assistance, Kenya offered last July to send 1,000 officers to Haiti to help tackle a worsening security crisis where escalating gang control has plunged millions into a humanitarian crisis. Jamaica, the Bahamas, Barbados, Benin, Chad and Bangladesh have also pledged personnel to the force.
