- Story Text: Thousands of faithful participated in a candlelight procession on Sunday (May 12) night at Portugal's Fatima shrine, one of Catholicism's most famous sanctuaries, to mark the first of three reported visions of the Virgin Mary before three shepherd children more than 100 years ago.
The first of three apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima is said to have taken place on May 13, 1917.
The story of Fatima's shepherd children has captivated Catholics since their first reported vision.
In 2017, Pope Francis gave the Catholic Church two of its youngest saints by canonizing two shepherd siblings believed to have seen the Madonna in 1917.
The Church believes the virgin gave three children - siblings Francisco and Jacinta Marto and their older cousin Lucia Dos Santos - three messages, the so-called secrets of Fatima. Dos Santos became a nun and died in 2005 at the age of 97, and efforts are underway to make her a saint as well.
Every year thousands of faithful descend on Fatima and some pray for miracles for the sick.
