- Story Text:Senior vice president of the Boeing Company and president of Boeing Global, Brendan Nelson, said on Wednesday (May 8) that production rates at the company will not be prioritized at the “expense of safety or quality”.
Speaking to Sky News Arabia in Abu Dhabi, Nelson said the mid-air incident in which a door panel blew off a Boeing 737 MAX 9 jet operated by Alaska Airlines was “distressing” and as a result major changes were in the pipeline including a slow-down in production and changes to the board.
Efforts to boost aviation safety in the United States have taken on new urgency following the Alaska Airline incident and the company has faced Senate hearings and conducted a shakeup of its top management.
In March, Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun announced that he would step down from the top job by year’s end amid the safety crisis at the company.
According to Bloomberg News the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating statements made by Boeing about its safety practices and will examine whether the plane-maker or its executives misled investors in violation of the Wall Street regulator's rules.
On Thursday (May 9), the U.S. Senate passed a sweeping civil aviation bill meant to deliver safer flying in the country including the call for hiring more air traffic controllers and steps to avert runway close-call incidents.
