- Story Text:U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday (May 10) spoke to media from a civil society conference in Kenya's capital Nairobi and said that the civilian casualties in the conflict in Gaza was unprecedented.
More than 34,000 Gazans have been killed in seven months of war, according to health authorities in the Hamas-controlled enclave who say thousands more dead are probably buried under rubble. Much of the Gaza Strip has been reduced to rubble.
Guterres reiterated the U.N's call for an end to the hostilities. However, ceasefire talks broke up on Thursday (May 9) with no agreement to halt the fighting and release hostages captured in the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attacks on Israel that killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli tallies, and precipitated the conflict.
Guterres also said that he hoped the end to hostilities would allow unimpeded humanitarian access and a release of the hostages. On Friday, aid agencies rang the alarm saying dwindling food and fuel stocks could force their operations to grind to a halt within days in Gaza as vital crossings remain shut.
