At least 10 people are missing in western Kenya after a truck they were riding in was swept away by raging floodwaters while attempting to cross a river on Friday (April 26), according to eyewitness accounts and video footage reviewed by Reuters.
A large group of people boarded the truck in hopes of being ferried across the swollen river, according to a witness. The truck was then suddenly overwhelmed by the powerful currents and washed away with people still aboard.
The number of casualties remains unclear, but local officials fear the death toll could be high, based on the number of people seen struggling against the flood. At least 45 people had already died in Kenya over the past month due to the severe weather before Friday's incident, according to the Kenya Red Cross.
In the video, as a person in blue jumps onto the truck before it enters the river, someone from the riverbank can be heard saying "May God help" in an apparent sign of the danger ahead. Moments later, the truck swerves violently as it is struck by the torrent.
