- Story Text:With the arrival of spring, the legendary gardens of Ninfa have revealed all their majesty, in a combination of art, archaeology, and nature that enchants romantics the world over.
A crystal clear river, wisteria touching the walls of the medieval ruins with their inflorescences.
All these elements make the Gardens of Ninfa, often described as the most romantic garden in the world,
an attraction that gives its best in spring with spectacular flowering and offers the right atmosphere for marriage proposals.
The city of Ninfa (whose name seems to derive from a small temple of classical age on a small island of the lake, dedicated to the Nymphs), dates its roots to Roman times, as a small agricultural centre.
In 1300, the town was looted and destroyed by troops of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. Thereafter malaria forced the few remaining residents to leave and abandon Ninfa.
The history of the garden itself begins in 1921, when Italian nobleman and diplomat Gelasio Caetani restored some ruins, including the tower and the town hall, and started on the garden, planting botanical species that he collected from abroad during his travels.
Construction of the garden continued involving Roffredo Caetani, his wife Marguerite Chapin, and their daughter Lelia Caetani, who created a foundation, the Roffredo Caetani di Sermoneta foundation, to which she gifted the castle of Sermoneta and the garden.
The garden greatly benefits from the climate of high humidity guaranteed by the Ninfa river and by the Norma cliff, which stops the passage of lower clouds causing frequent rains. It is home to more than 1300 different plant varieties all nurtured by numerous irrigation streams.
