- Story Text: Two hundred bats flew off to the wild on Saturday (April 6) after they were rescued in cities across Ukraine, nourished back to health and installed with a microchip for tracking and research.
The Ukrainian Bat Rehabilitation Centre together with volunteers gathered in a Kyiv park and waited for dusk to release the winged mammals, some saved from frontline cities, back to nature.
Among the released bats was 'Baby,' found by 35-year-old soldier Vladyslav Zhuravel at the eastern front line after shelling.
He named the bat 'Maliuk,' Ukrainian for baby and also the surname of the head of Ukraine's security service SBU, Vasyl Maliuk.
While caves are usually seen as their habitat, human impact on nature and urbanisation have brought some bat species to cities where they roost in buildings, attics and cellars.
