- Story Text:The Biden administration said it would not renew a licence that was due to expire early on Thursday (April 18) that had largely eased oil sanctions on Venezuela, as it moves to reimpose punitive measures in response to President Nicolas Maduro's failure to deliver on election promises.
Just hours before the deadline, the US Treasury Department announced on Wednesday (April 17) that it had issued a replacement license giving companies 45 days to "wind down" their operations and transactions in the OPEC nation's oil and gas sector.
Speaking at a rally, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who has been barred from running in the elections, said the government had failed to honour all the commitments it had made.
Jorge Rodriguez, the head of Venezuela's pro-government legislature, said Caracas had fulfilled the terms of last year's deal, and that the reinstatement of sanctions shows that the United States is "against free elections in Venezuela," he told a news conference later on Wednesday.
