- Story Text: Tourists descended on California's famous Death Valley during a pre-summer heat wave which is roaring much of the southwestern U.S. this week.
Steve and Deb Qualters from Boston, Massachusetts, were surprised by its intensity on Wednesday (June 5).
“I'll tell you. I've never seen a temperature like this come through in the north east, so it feels like baking right now," said Deb. “Instant tan,” Steve joked.
Forecasters attributed the excessive heat, coming more than two weeks before the official June 20 start of the summer season, to a strong ridge of atmospheric high pressure parked over the region and intensifying.
Death Valley Park Ranger Matt Lamar is bracing for another long, hot summer. "What we've really seen over the last couple of years is not just that the highs maybe are getting a little bit higher, but really that the lows aren't cooling down. So we're staying in these really hot temperatures for 24/48, our 72-hour period sometimes.”
