Palestinians mourned their dead on Friday (June 7), after Israeli tanks and warplanes blasted central and southern areas of the enclave overnight, killing at least 23 Palestinians according to local medics.
The body of the mayor of Al-Nuseirat Eyad Al-Mghari, who was also killed in an overnight strike, was brought to the Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah.
Municipal workers held prayers for the mayor, whose body was covered in a white sheet and draped with a high visibility vest.
Other mourners also gathered at the hospital, bidding relatives farewell, including Umm Yahya Al Hasanat, whose grandson was killed in a strike, she said.
Israel vowed to destroy Hamas as it launched an air and ground offensive in Gaza last October after militants stormed across the border into southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing around 1,200 people and taking more than 250 people hostage, according to Israeli tallies. About 120 hostages remain in Gaza.
Israel's invasion and bombardment of Gaza since then has killed over 36,000 people, according to health officials in the coastal enclave, who say thousands more dead are feared buried under rubble, with most of the 2.3 million population displaced.
