- Story Text: Havana, one of the largest and most eclectic cities in the Caribbean with some 2 million inhabitants, has been the capital of Cuba since 1607.
Described by many as standing still in time, the city is a mix of styles beginning with the colonial architecture of its fortresses and squares in Old Havana, an area declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
The rest of the city displays neoclassical, art deco and art nouveau buildings, as well as neighbourhoods with Soviet-style blocks of buildings built after the triumph of the 1959 revolution.
In recent years, modern hotel towers have been built in the city.
The view of the Malecon, a maritime promenade about eight kilometres long originally built to protect the city from stormy seas and high tides is perhaps Havana's most iconic image.
The remarkable deterioration of the city's infrastructure, buildings and streets has been accompanied by a systematic economic crisis, which has worsened in recent years.
Cuba is experiencing its worst social and economic crisis in decades, with food, medicine and fuel shortages, and growing discontent on the streets.
