- Story Text: Residents of Mongolia's capital Ulaanbaatar, as well as across the country, will vote in the upcoming parliamentary election on Friday (June 28), the first time since constitutional changes in June 2023 reconfigured the country’s legislature and electoral system.
The number of Members of Parliament grew from 76 to 126 as part of the amendment, with Friday's election involving a record 1,336 candidates running for office, according to the General Election Committee of Mongolia.
The country's General Authority for State Registration has said that over 2.2 million Mongolians are eligible to vote, with nearly half falling into the age group of 26 to 45.
Ulaanbaatar is Mongolia’s fast-growing capital of about 1.6 million people, or nearly half of the country’s population, which according to United Nations tallies, is at just around 3.3 million.
Founded in the 17th century, the capital has grown from a settlement of just a few yurts — traditional nomadic dwellings and referred to as "gers" locally — to a massive skyscraper-laden metropolis.
The capital itself is never far from the vast and expansive grassland steppe covering most of Mongolia, where many of the country’s nomads live off the land and their herds of animals.
