- Story Text:Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa provided late heroics to secure his team a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 on Monday (July 1), saving three penalties in a 3-0 shootout win against Slovenia.
The match had finished 0-0 after extra time as Costa wrote his name into tournament history by becoming the first keeper at the Euros to save three penalties while also keeping a clean sheet, having also saved a pivotal one-on-one against Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko in the 115th minute.
Speaking in the mixed zone after afterwards, the player of the match said he tried to just follow his gut instincts to guess where the Slovenian penalty takers would shoot.
Man city midfielder Bernardo Silva stepped up to hit home the winning penalty in the shootout for Portugal who will meet France - 1-0 winners against Belgium earlier on Monday - in the quarter-finals in Hamburg on Friday.
