- Story Text: Thousands of fans gathered in Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Friday (July 5) to wish athletes from the Japanese Olympic squad luck before they set off for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
About 317 athletes and staff wearing white suits embroidered with Team Japan logo were greeted by Tokyo 2020 mascot Miraitowa as they arrived at the event attended by approximately 6,000 fans, mostly school students who had been invited to the ceremony.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida spoke in a video message to boost the team's morale before their departure for the Games.
Japan expects to send off more than 400 athletes to participate the Paris Olympic Games, the largest team ever for Olympics overseas, announced by the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC). The JOC has set a target of 20 gold medals for the national team at Paris 2024. If achieved, it would be Japan's highest score for gold medal at an overseas Summer Olympics.
The Paris 2024 Olympics will open on July 26 and end on August 11.
