- Story Text: At the Alpine Shooting Range in Fort Worth, Texas, support for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is obvious and open.
Larry Collins' political opinions are as sharp as his shooting.
“I know the Democrats are doing everything they can to take guns away from people and anything is better than that, and Trump has demonstrated over and over that he’s pro-gun,” he told Reuters.
At the National Rifle Association's annual Leadership Forum in Dallas in May, Trump urged gun supporters to go to the polls in the November election and pledged to unravel gun regulations put in place by Democratic President Joe Biden. Trump accepted the influential group's endorsement, the third time the nation's top gun rights group has backed him.
Following the speech, the Biden campaign accused Trump of prioritizing the desires of the gun lobby over public safety.
Collins is worried about gun rights if Biden is re-elected.
“Because of where he’s gone trying to take guns away from people, I don’t see any gun owner anywhere who would ever vote for him. I don’t want to see a bunch of cops show up at my door trying to collect my collection of guns."
Jake Howard says it’s critical that his four boys grow up with a respect for and understanding of guns. He believes a growing number of people in the U.S. are pro-guns.
“And it’s becoming more commonplace for people to understand the Second Amendment was not meant to protect hunting. It was meant to protect our rights and to keep us free.”
Surveys show gun regulations are a divisive issue in the U.S., though a strong majority of Americans support at least some limits.
In a March Reuters/Ipsos survey, 53% of respondents said the government should regulate gun ownership, while 38% of respondents disagreed. Among Republicans, only 35% said the government should be involved.
