- Story Text: The global promotional tour for "Deadpool & Wolverine" touched down in London on Thursday (July 11), with Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman putting their bromance on display at the movie's UK sneak peek event.
The duo and the film's director and co-writer Shawn Levy have delighted fans with humorous, high-energy appearances at previous stops in Shanghai, Seoul and Berlin.
They showed no signs of slowing down in London, crediting friendship, their love for the movie - and their swanky accommodation - for keeping them going.
The third instalment in the "Deadpool" movie franchise sees Jackman's Wolverine return from retirement to help wise-cracking Deadpool, aka Wade Wilson (Reynolds) save his world.
"It's about friendship, you know, and friendship is another version of a love story, as well," said Reynolds, who co-wrote and produced the film, on the red carpet at the Eventim Apollo in West London's Hammersmith district.
"There's so many moments in the movie where it's hard to tell if Deadpool's talking a Wolverine, Wolverine talking to Deadpool, or it's Hugh and Ryan talking to each other. And I'm really proud of those moments."
Jackman had initially no intention to reprise the role of the gruff, clawed X-Man Wolverine. But the Australian actor said he started changing his mind after seeing the first "Deadpool" movie.
"It was something in here," he said, pointing at his heart. "I really thought I was done. And then, five or six years later, I was driving and I just knew in my bones I wanted to do that."
"I knew for fans it would be the thing they'd waited for, I knew it'd be a kind of dynamic that we've never seen before. I had no idea how hard it would be physically at age 55 to do it, but it's absolutely worth it. And I loved it, I have loved every second," he said.
Secrecy surrounds the film's plot details. Levy said staying loyal to the characters and respecting their legacy was at the heart of his and Reynolds' writing process.
"But then we pushed them into areas that other movies haven't. And so I think you're going to see some aspects to both their performances that are quite different than what we've seen in their prior films," he said.
The film sees British actor Emma Corrin making their MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) debut, appearing as villainous character Cassandra Nova, the evil twin of X-Men founder, Professor Xavier.
"It was amazing. Intimidating at first, I won't lie. But..it was the nicest team that I could have wished for. And the set felt like a playground. It felt like there were infinite possibilities," said Corrin, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns.
The only movie from Marvel and Disney this year, "Deadpool & Wolverine" is expected to be a box office hit when it begins its global cinematic rollout on July 24.
Levy said he was approaching any possible pressure with optimism.
"I focus on the opportunity, not the expectation. And the opportunity, the creative opportunity, to connect with a huge global audience in a new way, in a surprising and fresh way, that was delicious," he said, adding: "There is a lot riding on it but we've worked really hard to deliver the goods."
For Reynolds, 47, the film being finished and released to the world comes with other concerns.
"I feel like I've waited my entire life to do this one movie, so...The only problem that that poses is I don't know what the hell we're supposed to do next."
