- Story Text: The first conference on American studies at African universities was opened in the Ivory Coast on Sunday (25 July) with a call for closer links between the united States and African nations.
SYNOPSIS: The conference took place at the Congress Palace in the Ivory Coat capital, Abidjan, where delegates from over 20 countries gathered. The conference will last for four days and the main discussions will take place in closed sessions. The delegates will discuss the effects of the American Revolution and how the United States and Africa have affected each other culturally. One of those attending the conference is the United States Ambassador to the Ivory Coast, Robert Smith. The Ambassador made a call, particularly to French-speaking African nations, to strengthen their ties with his country.
Mademoiselle Marie-Therese Sangaret, Secretary-General of Abidjan University, spoke about the United States' role in world civilisation. She laid great importance upon the need for American studies in African universities. This was later reaffirmed by Professor J.F. Ade Ajayi of the University of Lagos.
