  • Story Text: Air Afrique, the multi-national African Airline, was proud possessor today of two new Caravelle 11 aeroplanes - introduced on Wednesday (27 September) at the start of a new inter-African service.

    Both planes started operations on Wednesday - their inaugural flight marking the demise of the four D.C.6 planes used until now. The new route - named RK 560 - will serve Dakar, Freetown, Robertsfield, Abidjan, Contonou, Lagos, Douala, Yaounde, Garoua, Fort-Lamy, Bangui, and Brazzaville - with further stops at Casablanca, Bamako, Bobo-Dioulasso, Ougadougou, Niamey and Lome.

    New features in the plane are giant cargo doors located to the rear of the cockpit, and an auxiliary turbine which permits airconditioning of the plane even when it is on the ground.

    Abidjan airport is getting a facelift too - or rather, an extra face. A new terminal building is under construction alongside the older one, and between them they will handle larger numbers of passengers in greater air-conditioned comfort.
