- Story Text: The French naval helicopter carrier Jeanne d'Arc and its escort ship the Forbin arrived in Abidjan on the Ivory Coat on Saturday (10 April) for a five day goodwill visit.
The two ships are both used by the French Navy as training ships and are currently on a tour of duty in the Atlantic.
During the stopover in Abidjan the officers of Jeanne d'Arc and Forbin met Ivory Coast President Felix Houphouet-Boigny.
The Jeanne d'Arc is a cruiser with a 12,000 tons displacement and was launched from the Brest shipyards in 1961. It has a crew of 850 men including 40 officers and is currently under the command of Captain Stephen Beaussant. While being used as a training ship it has a helo platform for four helicopters but during wartime this could be increased to eight.
Also launched from the Brest shipyards -- in 1955 -- the destroyer Forbin has a displacement of 3,600 tons, a crew of 250 men including 12 officers and is under the command of Captain Albert Reul.
When the ships leave Abidjan on Thursday (15 April) they will sail for Dakar in Senegal for a similar goodwill visit.
