- Story Text: After two years of global pandemic and a year of Hollywood strikes, San Diego Comic-Con opened its doors on Thursday (July 25) with its first fully realized program again.
One of the main casualties of the past three years was Hall H, where stars and filmmakers turn out for panels to discuss current or future projects.
Paola Guerrera, 32, from Mexico, who was dressed up as The X-Men's Rogue, told Reuters, “I’m really happy because now Hall H is back, exhibitions are back so it’s going to be great this year and I hope I’m going to see somebody – I don’t know – famous or something.”
Sydney Hamilton, 33, fro Long Beach, California, said, “The rooms are packed, people are excited and just seeing everyone put their best foot forward. We’re all duct taped together in one way, shape or form. It’s been invigorating for me.”
San Diego Comic-Con began as a small gathering in the basement of a hotel. Now, the event spreads throughout downtown San Diego with exhibitions, pop-ups and fan experiences.
"That’s what makes San Diego different from a lot of conventions," said Derek Shackleton, 45, from San Diego. He added, "The city just embraces it and the whole place transforms. We go to a lot of conventions and a lot of cities around and they’re all lovely places but there’s nothing like what San Diego does."
And, of course, there's the cosplay - people dressing up as their favorite sci-fi and fantasy heroes and villains.
Kaddie O'Keefe, 33, also from San Diego said, "I love this because like when I was a kid, you kind of got bullied for that kind of stuff and the community is so big now that everybody loves doing it and I love that because nobody should be beat up for anything they love doing, you know. So the fact that this is so mainstream now is wonderful."
San Diego Comic-Con runs until Sunday (July 28). Highlights to come include the Marvel Studios panel, Prime Video's 'The Rings of Power' panel and the big cosplay event on Saturday (July 27).
