- Story Text: Indian couturiers Siddartha Tytler and Kunal Rawal presented outfits put together with pieces from their men and women's collections, defying conventions and showcasing gender-neutral attires on the second day of India Couture Week on Friday (July 26).
Designs with flowy silhouettes, Indo-western elements, and drapes, took center-stage as male and female models donned attires from their counterparts' collection.
Indian couturier Siddartha Tytler's showcase featured an elaborate spread with a revolving ramp, golden chairs, candelabras, floral arrangements, fruits, and a white bust of the Roman emperor Caligula.
Tytler's models wore embroidered attires with Roman tiaras while his showstoppers, Indian actors Rahul Khanna and Malaika Arora, wore embroidered black traditional attires of 'Sherwani', a long shirt, and heavily embroidered blouse and 'Lehenga' skirt, respectively.
"Some of the male models were wearing 'Sharara', (traditionally feminine attire) kind of loose bell bottom pants and they were looking quite good," said Soni Kaur, one of Tytler's models.
Meanwhile, couturier Kunal Rawal's collection 'Sehra' traditional headdress worn by Indian grooms, featured similar intentional overlapping between the male and female collections.
Rawal broke the norm by having his female models wear the 'Sehra,' typically an Indian groom's adornment. However, he stuck to tradition with elements such as the male models posing as grooms carrying a decorated sword.
Indian actor Aditya Roy Kapur walked as Rawal's showstopper wearing an embroidered blue 'Sherwani,' a traditional long button down coat and black 'Salwar,' flared pants.
Several Bollywood celebrities such as Mohit Marwah, actor Arjun Kapoor, actress Malaika Arora, and stylist Rhea Kapoor attended Rawal's show.
The weeklong Couture Week opened on Wednesday (July 24) with veteran designers Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla and is set to conclude on July 31. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
