- Story Text: The Italian Captain of the Liberian freighter "Dora" -- which ran a ground off the Ivory Coast last August and has remained a navigation hazard and a potential pollution problem ever since -- has been sentenced in default by an Abidjan court to one year's imprisonment. The Captain, who lives in Genoa, Italy, was found guilty of causing the grounding by a breach of navigational rules.
This film, reissued from the Visnews film library, shows the tanker and the Ivorian Minister of Public Works after inspecting it last September.
SYNOPSIS: Authorities in the Ivory Coast port city of Abidjan are concerned with the problem created by the presence of a damaged Liberian freighter. Experts fear that the beaches of Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Dahomey and Nigeria will be polluted by the ship's fuel if measures to salvage the cargo ship are not successful.
The damaged ship "Dora" ran aground near the port last August in a thick fog. Already holed below the water line, the "Dora", which carries a cargo of raw timber, is in danger of breaking up.
Ivory Coast Minister of Public Works, Mr. Grah Kadji, arrived at the port on Saturday in order to make recommendations as to what could be done in an effort to prevent the pollution problem.
