  • Story Text: The President of the National Assembly of the Ivory Coast, Mr. Philippe Yace and his wife, launched their country's National Day ceremonies at Expo 70 in Osaka on Friday (22 May).

    Mr. and Mrs. Yace were accompanied by a party of eight people including Mr. Henri Bedie, the Minister of Economy and Finance. Later Mr. Bedie met officials of the Japanese Foreign Minister and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

    The Ivory Coast visitors went to the Festival Plaza at the Expo site to take part in official ceremonies. The Plaza was decorated with hundreds of Ivory Coast flags and insignias and thousands of curious spectators turned out to watch native dancers and singers in traditional costumes.

    Mr. Toru Hagiwara, a Japanese Government representative to Expo, spoke about the long friendship between the two countries and of Japan's desire to promote more trade with the West African republic.

    Later Mr. and Mrs. Yace and their party watched thousands of Japanese school children in a display of formation marching at Expo's huge open air stadium. They also toured the Ivory Coast Pavilion before seeing the remainder of the site.

    The Ivory Coast visitors are scheduled to leave Japan on May 29.
