- Story Text: Representatives of 33 banks in 29 African countries are meeting in the Ivory Coast capital of Abidjan to discuss increased co-operation for development. It's the second conference of the National Banks for african Development which started yesterday (Tuesday).
The idea for the formation of the B.A.D. was put forward in August last year during a conference of Governors from 15 banks. It was decided at the first meeting of the organisation which was formed as a result of the conference to invite all national banks to join.
This conference in Abidjan is the biggest yet held by the African banks. It's so big in fact that the site had to be moved to the National Assembly building so all the delegates could be seated.
The representatives over the next few days will discuss ways to help African development and what role the banks should play.
Also attending the conference are observers from nine organisations including the World Bank and the United Nations Organisation for Industrial Development.
