This year’s celebration carries the theme, "Protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact," emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the rights and autonomy of these communities. The United Nations (UN) reports that 476 million people across 90 countries identify as part of indigenous groups, which include more than 200 communities that have chosen to live separately from the broader society.
