- Story Text: Sweden's world record holder Sarah Sjostrom said she was “extremely proud” after adding the women's 50 metres gold to her 100m title in her fifth Olympic Games Sunday (August 4) in Paris.
“Everyone says the 100 meters freestyle is always like the queen event of swimming so, I mean, I couldn't be more proud. Like, I'm extremely proud. It's crazy that I have done this,” she told Reuters after the event.
Australia's Meg Harris, a gold medallist in the 4x100m free relay, took the silver and China's Zhang Yufei secured the bronze for her fifth medal of the Games and ninth of her career.
The Swede, whose 100m win was almost accidental after she made a late decision to enter, has defied the years by swimming as well as ever in a Games with few world records and where times have mattered less than tactics and mental strength.
The other races on the final day of Olympic swimming saw iron-man Bobby Finke and the U.S. women's medley relay team shatter world records but the U.S. men's medley relay team suffered their first defeat ever at an Olympics with China taking the gold.
