- Story Text: A group of experts are meeting in Abidjan, capital of the Ivory Coast, to prepare for the next Conference of African Ministers of Trade, Development and Finance.
The Assistant Secretary-General of the Organisation for African Unity (OAU), Mr. Kamanda, said at Monday's (26 February) opening session t hat foreign aid was making African countries more dependent on the West.
Mr. Kamanda said vast areas of the Continent were longing to achieve their own transformation without interferences or having to accept any imposed models. The states of Africa were not parks or game reserves for the use of other countries, he said.
The devaluation of the dollar -- coming at a time when the Group of Twenty was trying to reform the international monetary system -- proved, he claimed, lack of goodwill among advanced nations to solve the problems of underdevelopment.
Experts from OAU, The U.N. Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Development Bank are attending the meeting, which ends on Thursday (1 March).
