- Story Text: The French Minster of Health, Mlle. Marie-Madeleine Dienesch, was decorated by the President of the Ivory Coast before she returned home from a medical conference. President Felix Houphouet-Boigny awarded her the rank of Grand Officer of the Ivorian National Order ("grand officer de l'ordre national ivorien"). He praised the friendship between France and the Ivory Coast, and Mlle. Dienesch's own endeavours in the field of health and social welfare.
SYNOPSIS: In the Ivory Coast a medical conference ended with a special occasion for Mlle Marie-Madeleine Dienesch, the French Health Minister. She was invited to the Presidential Palace by the Head of State, President Felix Houphouet-Boigny.
There the National Ivorien Order was bestowed upon Mlle. Dienesch, as a mark of regard for France and the Minster personally.
Mlle. Dienesch was elected to the French Assembly in 1945, and became a Minister in 1968.
The President recalled that she was first of all assistant to the Minister of Education, and subsequently to the Minster of Social Affairs, when she created a new department and showed considerable talent in helping less fortunate people. Mr. Houphouet-Boigny said that relations with France had not always been amicable, but Mlle. Dienesch's visit marked the beginning of a new relationship.
In the Ivory Coast medical services are organised by the state, but there is little in the way of other social services. France is playing a big part in Ivorien development, and is its biggest source of aid.
