- Story Text: An agreement was signed between France and the Ivory Coast on Friday (14 December) to finance two educational projects in the West African nation. The French government has agreed to make grants to the Ivory Coast totalling 328 million france CFA (GBP 550,000 sterling).
One of the two grants, for 305 million france CFA (GBP 510,000 sterling) will go towards the purchase of new equipment for the Educational Television Centre at Bouake, 350 kms. (218 miles) north of Abidjan. Some of the money will go towards secondary school and extra-mural projects, as well as paying for new materials. The new grant will bring the total amount of French aid to educational television in the Ivory Coast since 1959 to 1,624.5 million france CFA. (2,805 thousand pounds sterling).
The second grant will be used for a second black of buildings and new accommodation at the National Technical Institute at the University of Abidjan.
The agreement was signed at the Ministry of Finance and Economy. France was represented by the Head of the Permanent Mission in Abidjan, M. Jacques LeClerc. The senior Ivory Coast Minister present was M. Abdoulaye, the Secretary of State for the Budget.
In a speech at the ceremony, M. Kone said the Educational Television project was a good example of what could be achieved with international co-operation. He thanked the French government for their assistance in the two projects.
SYNOPSIS: The Minister of Finance and Economy in Abidjan was the setting for the signing of a financial agreement between France and the Ivory Coast on Friday.
The agreement, signed by M. Jacques LeClerc for the French government and M. Abdoulaye Kone for the Ivory Coast, was for a grant of three-hundred-and-twenty-eight france CFA towards two educational projects in the West African nation.
Most of the money will go towards new equipment and materials for the Educational Television Centre at Bouake, some three hundred and fifty kilometres to the north of Abidjan.
In his speech, M. Kone, the Ivory Coast's Secretary of State for the Budget, said the Educational Television project was a good example of what could be achieved through international co-operation. He also thanked the French government for the financial assistance it has given the Ivory Coast.
The second part of the grant is to go towards the construction of a block of buildings and a residence hall at Abidjan University's National Technical Institute.
After the speeches, M. LeClarc, Head of France's Mission in Abidjan, and M. Kone drank a toast together.
