- Story Text: Canadian dollars will help finance important power and educational projects in the Ivory Coast under agreements signed in Abidjan on Friday (12 April). Canada's Ambassador M. Gilles Mathieu met Iverian Finance Minister Henri Konan Bedie to sign the two agreements that open the way to this latest aid scheme.
A project to bring electrical power to the Kossou region of the Ivory Coast now becomes the biggest aid scheme ever financed by Canada in the Ivory Coast. The sum of over four million dollars (GBP 1.6 million storling) already allocated to the plan is being increased under Friday's agreement to over six million dollars (GBP 2.4 million sterling). An essential part of the plan is to build new transformers and bring power to isolated villages.
In education, Canada will be aiding the existing Ivorian scheme for schools' television programmes. A sum of over three million dollars (GBP 1.2 million sterling) is involved.
M. Konan Bedie in a speech of thanks on Friday, declared that Canada has become one of the most important sources of development aid to the Ivery Coast.
