- Story Text: Road blocks have been hampering efforts to get cocoa
out of the bush.
Road blocks set up following days of anti-French
rioting in Ivory Coast have been hampering efforts to get
cocoa out of the bush, according to cocoa traders.
Ivory Coast's ports have started operating again after
violent unrest but some in the industry said business was
subdued for the time of year as transport difficulties
persisted inland.
Truck drivers said some cocoa buyers were paying for
the army to escort their lorries to the ports for a fee to
avoid racketeering as they rushed to get their loads to
shippers in case the calm did not last.
Buyers in the Daloa region are worried that the bean
supply from Vavoua, 60km to the north and accounting for
around 40 percent of regional production, will dry up after
the road running south from the rebel town was closed by
the military.
The New Forces rebel group said 52 people were killed
in Vavoua after bombing raids on the north two weeks ago by
government warplanes trying to recapture rebel-held
territory.
